Digitally Transforming a $35 Billion Global Organisation
Bechtel is one of the world’s most respected engineering, construction, and project management companies delivering landmark projects that create long-term progress and economic growth. Since 1898, it has completed more than 25,000 extraordinary projects across 160 countries on seven continents. It operates through four global businesses: Infrastructure; Nuclear, Security & Environmental; Oil, Gas & Chemicals; and Mining & Metals. It is built on more than a century of leadership and a relentless adherence to its values, the core of which are safety, quality, ethics, and integrity.
Bechtel’s Corporate Affairs engaged in discussions with the team from i3 Digital in the fall of 2015. The initial contact was about their corporate website, www.bechtel.com, which had been built using Kentico’s EMS platform. Bechtel had experienced issues with the quality of the site and had already terminated the relationship with their original Kentico Partner. They decided to approach and vet i3 Digital after reviewing the top ten Kentico Partners globally.
Obviously, after such a poor experience with, a previous Kentico Partner, they were very hesitant in getting involved with a new partner. After numerous clarification calls and an offer from i3 Digital to carry out an audit on their existing Kentico websites code base, Bechtel decided to trust us. We downloaded the complete site and all source code and carried out a full review. The news was not great. The core CMS had been hacked and fundamentally damaged by the previous developers. It would take a rebuild on a new version of the Kentico CMS to fix the problems.
Before Bechtel entrusted us with their global corporate website, they decided to test our approach and skills on two smaller projects. After some negotiations and assurances, they awarded us the contract to deliver two smaller campaign sites. These being The Art of the Build - (Celebrating the modern marvels of the world and the people who built them) http://artofthebuild.bechtel.com and Build 100 - http://blog.bechtel.com (both of these sites have recently been transitioned into the main Bechtel corporate website).
The team at i3 Digital love a challenge, and we knocked both projects out of the park! Delivering two fit-for-purpose websites on time and to budget. We also showed Bechtel how good Kentico CMS could be if delivered and deployed correctly.
What we delivered
The team at Bechtel now believed in us and awarded us the complete redesign and rebuild of their global website www.bechtel.com to meet their marketing, promotional and communication activities across seven (7) continents. Overall, Bechtel required a new website that maximised the visual impact of its globally renowned projects and allowed easy sharing of information to relevant interested parties. Knowing the value placed on displaying the stunning projects delivered by Bechtel, i3 Digital implemented a unique dynamic grid which showcases work undertaken by the company and also acts as an engagement tool for prospective leads.
Without a doubt, Bechtel is a global leader in its key industries, and their new corporate website ensures that sharing their “thought Leadership” is as easy as possible. The new site enables Bechtel to gain new business leads, who can easily subscribe to the organisation’s email and contact lists. The website is built with SEO in mind, and all metadata, canonical links, social meta and event tracking elements have been implemented. We also ensured that Bechtel personnel could easily add content and have the flexibility to vary content and page layouts via a range of custom widgets.
The categorisation of projects, blogs and news is an essential aspect of Bechtel’s website due to the volume of information and range of projects across seven continents. It was also highly important that the site has an intuitive, easy to use search functionality supported by filtering capabilities. As Bechtel’s site content is very diverse, it was essential to give the CMS editors the flexibility to add content using widgets to display featured projects, blogs or press releases.
The website has been fully integrated with all of the corporation’s social media accounts, including Facebook, Twitter, Google+ and YouTube. The site has been built with SEO in mind. All metadata, canonical links, social meta tags and Google Analytics event tracking elements have been implemented throughout the site, which has helped to attract and track more visitors and potential customers.
